They Make Life Too Difficult

Pros: Being able to leave them behind. All pro's are overcome by the con's in trying to move from their service.

Cons: Unknown to us, Valuweb/Hostway had our Domain Name registered with a company run out of BULGARIA, who did the right thing and released the domain name after a few serious phone calls instead of making us wait 5 to 7 days as they first insisted.

A month after the service was moved and the Hostway account was confirmed as "cancelled" by Hostway support e-mail, Hostway has begun trying to collect another month service saying that the account was never cancelled and that we owe them money until it is cancelled! This is seriously childish.

The Story:

We moved to GoDaddy because the support, price and dashboard feature are so much better than what Hostway offers. We weren't unhappy with Hostway, until we tried to move.

Our account moved from Valueweb to Hostway a number of years ago, to our surprise. But, the service worked, so we stayed.

Once we decided to move our service recently, the troubles began.

First, we learned that our domain name was registered with someone we didn't know, Domain People. Trying to track down these folk ended up with multiple phone calls to a Vancouver, B.C. telno, which turned out to be a number routed to BULGARIA!!

When they insisted it would take 5 to 7 days to move the domain to GoDaddy as registrar, I got REAL nervous, and real serious. More phone calls finally got me in touch with a young man in Bulgaria who listened, and talked with someone higher up, and within an hour our domain was back in the U.S.A. Domain People did what was right, our service was at GoDaddy, and that would have been the end of the story, except....

A month after settling with Hostway and receiving an acknowledgement that our account was cancelled, Hostway has begun trying to collect for another months service claiming that the account was never cancelled, insisting they never sent the e-mail I received from them confirming cancellation of the service.

We had no complaint about Hostway for years because we never had any contact with them.

My advice is FIRST find out where your domain is if you are with Hostway.

Second, compare GoDaddy prices to what you're paying to Hostway. We bought a multi-year service contract with GoDaddy for what we were paying Hostway for one year's service. And, the people at GoDaddy are a lot nicer.
