Super happy with Colba

Having moved to a new place, I needed an internet connection. I thought about going with Acanac, since I have used them before and have been super happy.

However, when I saw I could get ADSL2+ at 24 Mbps with Colba, I was curious. Reading online had me worried. A lot of people said the service was terrible and the connection was very slow. I was also worried that a one year advance subscription would cost about $600 with no guarantee (with dry loop, installation, modem, taxes, etc).

However, I decided to risk it. And in my case, it was definitely worth it.

First, I live very close to a (col?). Anyway, I live about 100 feet from where the bell trucks are. So I could hit the building with a rock from my balcony.

I am currently connecting at 17Mbps down and 0.86Mbps up. Not theoretical, but with SpeedTest. Very stable connection. I don't have Annex M enabled, but I think I would get better upload if I did.

I did get my own modem, a TP-Link (TD-W8960N). You can buy the same modem they sell a lot cheaper if you look around. They don't force you to use theirs so it's not a problem. I saw the non-wireless unlocked Thomson new for $40. I paid mine $60 because I wanted wireless N. Plus TP-Link makes products that look cool.

My only complaint is that initially I was supposed to get an email so I could schedule a technician to come to install my dry-loop. However, I didn't get the email. I called back to confirm my email, and they still didn't send it. I'm sure the person on the phone was not writing down my correct email. So I sent them an email and they replied very quickly. In the future I'd rather just deal with them by email, not by phone.

Btw the Bell technician was very nice. He checked my line outside (I was worried because I live in a dump, turns out it's a good line), and then inside he fixed the wires because the old tenant had played around with them. He even put new plates because I had none (the wires were out in the open).

I hate the fact that I have to pay $10 a month for dry-loop but I guess that's what happens when you live in Canada. It's a lot of money to rent 100 feet of wires.
