We were customers of 1&1 Internet for over a year using first managed and then unmanaged dedicated hosting services they provide. The first thing we noticed was the problems with our server regularly going down for no particular reason. We needed quite a special setup for our projects to operate, so we decided that this may be the reason for the unexpected faults. As a result we switched to unmanaged solution, where we were in the position to set up all things the way we wanted and believed to be most stable for our needs. This, however, did not solve the problems. Our server kept going down for no particular reason, but, possibly this time the faults were more intermittent. After some two months trying to figure out what could be the reason for this, we got completely clueless. Thus, after careful consideration we decided to switch to Leaseweb, a dutch dedicated hosting provider. In a week, we had our new server set up with most services moved to the machine. It took some time to transfer some of the domains, but in about two weeks it was mostly down.

As of now, we've been with Leaseweb for more than half a year, and our server has been up for the same time. No unnecessary reboots, no downtime, nothing. It just works, with the very same setup, same OS, same configuration. In fact, most of the config files were literally copied over from the 1&1 server (except those that included IP specific settings or similar stuff).

In the meantime, we have (unfortunately) left out one of our domains registered with 1&1. We were planning to move it along with the other domains, but it happened to have an out-of-date email address for contact details, and the address is used to send a message with approval code when you're transferring the domain. Surely, we decided to contact 1&1 and ask them to update the information.

Initially, we received a response in about a week asking us to provide security information, etc. Having this and similar stuff done, we finally received a confirmation email from 1&1 saying that the update was completed. A week or so later we requested Leaseweb to transfer the domain and got a reply that a confirmation email was sent to the Admin-C email specified for the domain. We, however, did not receive anything. After checking the domain record we found that it still had the old email address. This was confirmed by the official 1&1 registrar at http://registrar.schlund.info . So we contacted 1&1 support again and requested another transfer. Similarly to the last time, we went through all the usual security checks and again we were said that the transfer was done and it would take a few days to update. This was three weeks ago. As of now, the domain record is still not updated, according to the 1&1's Schlund registrar. Our service and all the dependent projects still remain down. For the moment, we don't see any other option than going for a legal action against 1&1.

Funny, though, we actually got an email asking to complete a survey in regards to the quality of customer support we received. No need to say what was our response, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

Best of luck to you if you're with 1&1 at the moment, but, if I was you, I would run away from them as quick as I can. Though as you can see it's not always easy.
