😁 Excellent tech support and bandwidth
Our sites been serving up to half a terabyte a day of video to our church members via our site which has been up for over 5 years with Cal Pop - since our first launch which could not have happened without their help, we have not had any trouble contacting them via phone email or their online trouble ticket. Allows me to sleep at night!

😃 I have been with CalPop for 2+ years, mainly to avoided having to add another "high end" server at our other "fully manage" provider.
CalPop has excellent bandwidth with great pricing. CalPop's prices are what they advertise and you can get a lot of muscle compared at a great price.
I've had about 45 minutes of downtime over the last 2 years.
Tech support is 24/7 . . . kinda . . . there is always someone there, but real life response is typically 2-5 hours (double that on most weekends.) Their ticket system is good and becomes a nice knowlege base for your system. They handle reboots (I've only needed 1 in 2 years) and most anything else you put into the ticket system and need help with, but don't expect 1 hour response time on most issues.
I have also hosted with over 2 dozen other companies. RackSpace, BlueHost, to name a few. CalPop is my low cost provider and if you're a moderate to sophisticated user who can manage your own box (with a panel), there's no [read more...]

😠 Their prices are great, but as a result they are over-capacity. It is warm in there. You can feel the air blowing, but it is non-cooled air. The server racks are so dense that you can feel the heat as you walk among the cabinets.
Their staff varies from non-helpful to hostile. During the most recent outage they would pick up the phone and just set it on the desk. I could hear them in the back ground, but they would never answer.
I'm a consultant that has a client here. The client won't move because the prices are so much lower than the competition. But, I would NEVER host any mission critical servers here. As I write this I am restoring a server from backup because of their most recent power outage.

European Hosts Growing, Netcraft Says - European-based Web hosting providers 1&1 Internet (oneandone.com), Gandi (gandi.net) and Tect AG (tect.de) were among the four fastest growing Web hosts in May, according to research and analysis firm Netcraft's (netcraft.com) Hosting Provider Switching Analysis. 1&1 and Tect AG are based in Germany. Gandi is based in France.
Netcraft compiled a top ten list of the fastest growing providers based on the total number of hostnames acquired. 😁 I have been with CalPop for 4+ years. I started off with a dedicated server, then two, then three. Finally, I bought my own box and host a single box with many Xen virtual machines.
CalPop has excellent bandwidth and their prices are truly low. Most other providers have "come on" pricing, but you wind up paying a lot more than the advertised price ("oh, you want enough RAM in your box to boot Linux, that'll be an extra $20/mo... you want RAID hard drives, that'll be an extra $50/mo..."). CalPop's prices are what they advertise.
CalPop's bandwidth is excellent. I've seen about 6 hours of downtime over the last 4 years. I get what I pay for in terms of tech support... they'll reboot a machine or replace RAM or a hard drive.
I have also hosted with Verio, AT&T and others. CalPop is a low cost provider and if you're a sophisticated users who can manage your own box, there's no better hosting provider. If you want a lot of hand holding, you can pay a lot more, but until [read more...]

With that being said, after six month's of having one of my clients being on Calpop's hosting, I have to say that Calpop has to be the worse company that I have ever seen in the industry.
First they promise 100% uptime, but that isn't even close to true. In a month's time, their servers went down at least three times. On top of that, they site was hit with a DDoS attack for which they couldn't even fix. Their explanation to us was that "it happened to a number of servers" and that "maybe you were running a chat service." (Seriously, that's what they told me over the phone).
Now, the same business site has gone down two and as I am typing this, I can't seem to get anyone to answer their 24-hour contact number (the receptionist just keeps answering and putting me on [read more...]

😠 CalPOP Hosting is knowingly supporting spam. They are rude if you call they refuse to help.
Lynn Hoover (lynn@calpop.com) is the owner. Matt Crowin (matt@calpop.com) is the sales manager.
I have been receiving spam from CalPop servers. I contact the company and spoke with Matt Crowin (matt@calpop.com) the sales manager. He appears to be aware of the spam and is extremely rude and refused to help me. I then called and asked to speak with Lynn Hoover (lynn@calpop.com) the owner of the spamming servers and company. I was told that I could not speak to her. After some research I found that they have been spamming for a long time and do not care to stop.
According to my online research Matt Crowin (matt@calpop.com) has a history of disrespect, is aware of the spamming practices and Lynn Hoover (lynn@calpop.com) appears to be absent from the daily operations but fully aware of the spam situation.
