Apr 21, 2004 : C&W Deploys Anti-DDoS for Gibtelecom

📅 - Telecommunications carrier Cable & Wireless (http://www.cw.com) announced on Wednesday that it has developed a distributed denial of service (DDoS) solution for Gibtelecom (http://www.gnc.gi), an Internet service provider based in Gibraltar and a long-standing Cable & Wireless IP transit customer. The solution, based on the principles of detection, diversion, multi-layer analysis and mitigation, is a fully managed service, monitored 24x7 by Cable & Wireless.

"Cable & Wireless has reacted within a very short timescale to protect us and our customers against these attacks," says Xavi Bado, technical director or Gibtelecom. "We are very impressed by Cable & Wireless' responsiveness and expertise in security. This experience has further strengthened our close working relationship, developed over the last seven years."
According to Cable & Wireless, the solution is designed to help service provdiers such as Gibtelecom protect its network from DDoS attacks, allowing it to provide continuous, uninterrupted service. Gibtelecom requested an anti-DDoS solution as a result of the large number of gambling companies it serves. In recent months, cyber-extortion and attacks on online gaming operations have increased significantly.
"The recent flurry of attacks has shown just how vulnerable service providers and their customers are to DDoS attacks," says Andrew Sangster, managing director of carrier services at Cable & Wireless. "In this environment it is sometimes not enough to provide highest level IP access service, it is also necessary to demonstrate real expertise in network security. By doing so, we have consolidated the relationship with a valued customer."
