Jun 1, 2004 : UK Telecoms Needed in Post-War Iraq

📅 - According to reports released last week, a UK Department of Trade and Industry gathering meeting, in which UK telecoms industry players met with Iraq's emerging telecoms operators, presented the clear message that it would be critical that UK suppliers aid in the rebuilding of Iraq through aid in telecommunications.

Trade and investment minister Mike O?Brien, who hosted the conference, said that telecoms infrastructure is essential to the future of Iraq. He added that the UK was home to some of the best innovators and engineers in the world, and one of the most competitive markets, with leading communications regulator Ofcom.
Many of the suppliers in attendance felt that wireless should be recognized as an essential factor in the country's development. Some talked about CDMA450 potentially being used to connect areas outside of the main cities, despite a spat last year that resulted in the GSM standard.
O'Brien also expressed that while the UK is gaining a number of post-war contracts, there's always room for improvement, citing BT as one company making progress in Iraq.
