Aug 26, 2005 : The webhost industry: week review

📅 - This week's Web hosting news included a significant European acquisition, but the most notable trend was undoubtedly the signing of a series of new contracts by some of the big players in the hosting market.

On Thursday, it was reported that European hosting provider Active 24 had signed an agreement to acquire CP Online, the Internet services division of Czechoslovakia's Computer Press. Active 24 will pay the equivalent of approximately $470,000 for the firm, which it says will increase its share of the Czechoslovakian market to 30 percent.

Beyond the acquisition, much of the week's biggest stories came from new customer signings, including several from both AT&T and Terremark.

On Tuesday, AT&T announced that it had been chosen to provide colocation and managed services to business process outsourcing firm Extraprise and its Insight-to-Interaction software platform. AT&T says it will provide Extraprise customers with on-demand access to the company's software. It will initially provide colocation at its Boston-area data center. Extraprise says it anticipates moving some of its internal data center systems to AT&T's facilities.

And on Thursday, AT&T said it had signed an agreement to provide managed hosting solutions for the new online gaming platform of computer and video games manufacturer Konami Digital Entertainment. AT&T will provide hosting and monitoring for the platform, which will allow multiple users to play games online. The solution will also provide data backup and rerouting for Konami's primary data center in Japan.

On Wednesday, Terremark announced that it had been chosen by U.S. Century bank to house infrastructure for its SecuredVirtual Banking Suite at the NAP of the Americas facility. SecuredVirtual Banking Suite provides customers with disaster recovery and business continuity services that meet Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council guidelines. Terremark says it is familiar with federal guidelines for banking and financial institutions, and has tailored its service to meet those guidelines.

And on Thursday, Terremark announced that auction site Realauction.com had moved its servers to the NAP of the Americas, a move that would give it increased data security, faster processing and enhanced access to networks around the world. Realauction says its experience in government data transfer and online tax lien auctions make security, reliability and speed vital considerations for its business.

Along with AT&T and Terremark, data center operator 365 Main announced that content distribution company BitTorrent had chosen 365 Mains facility to house its infrastructure. The company said it was chosen for its location, service and intelligently designed building structure. Located in downtown San Francisco, 365 Main's data center runs a carrier-neutral platform, providing customers with a variety of connecting choices.

While it is unlikely that any of the new customer acquisitions will produce any ongoing news in the weeks to come, it is very possible that major hosting providers will continue the string of high-profile customer acquisitions.
