May, 2016 : More than 50K .cloud Domains Registered in Just 3 Months


📅 - In less than three months, about 50,000 .cloud domain names have been registered with growing interest. The .cloud domain is based in Arezzo, Italy and it only took 24 hours for the first 20,000 to be registered. This happed right after the General Availability phase began on February 16th, 2016.

The .cloud domain is one of the newest of the TLDs to be released, along with about 1,000 other extensions. Some of the organizations adopting the .cloud rather quickly include SpamExperts, Atomia and Ubantu.

The block was put in place by the house IT team due to FBI warnings of security vulnerabilities. Separate incidents involving the Google cloud apps and Yahoo mail lead to the block.

The lawmakers and staffers received an email on April 30th warning of the potential of phishing attacks on the network. 📅 - Sony Invests in Artificial Intelligence with California Startup Cogitai - Sony just announced that it has invested an undisclosed amount in the 1 year old California artificial intelligence (AI) startup, Cogitai. Three researchers founded the company to improve the AI technology learning and response patterns through real-world interactions.

Sony stated that the investment is part of a plan to build out its AI offshoot business and cultivate that into a larger part of its revenue.

📅 - U.S. Navy To Pay $11 Million For Quantum Computer Training - A unit in the U.S. Navy announced it will be undergoing quantum computer training through Canadian company D-Wave. The company will receive $11 million in exchange for the training, which does not include the cost of the quantum computer hardware that will be needed upon completion of training.

The Naval unit undergoing the training is the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific, also known as SPAWAR. The unit is headquartered in San Diego, where it also studies other technologies like unmanned aerial vehicles, amphibious robots, and virtual reality.
