Russian Government Suspected Of Hacking The White House’s Computer Systems
📅 - The White House's computer network systems were victim to a hacking breach thought to be the work of the Russian government, said a White House official on Tuesday.
According to the Washington Post, the White House's networks were temporarily disrupted, though officials said none of the systems were damages and there is no evidence that the classified network was hacked.
“In the course of assessing recent threats, we identified activity of concern on the Executive Office of the President network,” said the official who asked to be unnamed. “ We took immediate measures to evaluate and mitigate the activity… Unfortunately, some of that resulted in the disruption of regular services to users. But people were on it and are dealing with it.”
Officials have not yet released details on who was behind the attack and how much data was accessed, though did say the FBI, Secret Service, and NSA are actively involved in the investigation.
Sources noted that the hacking attempt on the White House was first discovered around two to three weeks ago, adding that some staff personnel had to change their passwords while Intranet and VPN access were disabled for a little while.
A second official added that ,” on a regular basis there are bad actors out there who are attempting to achieve intrusions into our systems. This is a constant battle for the government and our sensitive government computer systems, so it's always a concern for us that individuals are trying to compromise systems and get access to our networks.”
