Jun, 2014 : Singapore Aims To Be The World’s First Smart City

📅 - Singapore has unveiled plans to turn one of its urban cities into the world's first “Smart Nation.”

The Singapore government announced its strategy on Tuesday at the CommunicAsia trade show, where authorities revealed trials will begin in the third quarter of 2014 in the Jurong Lake District.

Boxes hooked with sensors will be attached to fiber optic-lines and placed around the district at street lights, parks, and bust stops, CNet reports.

These boxes are able to detect traffic jams, pollution, rainfall, litter, and even how full trash cans are.

“We will make Singapore a smart nation: enabling safer, cleaner and greener urban living, more transport options, better care for the elderly at home; more responsive public services and more opportunities for citizen engagement,” said Singapore president Tony Tan Keng Yam.

According to Yahoo News, there will be over 15 different types of technology running throughout Jurong Lake District.

Singapore's Minister for Communications and Information, Yaacob Ibrahim, says he hopes to eventually have at least 100 above ground boxes running through Singapore, though he did not mention a specific time frame.
