Background:

The Nominating Committee is designed to function independently from the ICANNBoard, Supporting Organisations, and Advisory Committees. Nominating Committeemembers act only on behalf of the interests of the global Internet communityand within the scope of the ICANN mission and responsibilities assigned toit by the ICANN Bylaws.

Nominating Committee members contribute understanding of the broad interestsof the Internet community as a whole, and knowledge and experience of specificInternet constituencies who have appointed them.

The challenge for the Nominating Committee is to integrate these perspectivesand derive consensus in its selections. Although appointed by Supporting Organisationsand other ICANN entities, individual Nominating Committee members are not accountableto their appointing constituencies.

Members are, of course, accountable for adherence to the ICANN Bylaws andfor compliance with the rules and procedures established by the NominatingCommittee.

Successful candidates are not remunerated, although direct expenses incurredin the course of duty will be reimbursed. These positions may involve significantinternational travel, including personal presence at periodic ICANN meetings,as well as regular telephone and Internet communications.

Recent ICANN Meetings have been held in New Zealand, Canada, Luxembourg, Argentina,South Africa, Morocco, Brazil, Portugal, Puerto Rico and the United States.Meetings during 2008 are scheduled for New Delhi, India, Paris, France, anda city in Africa to be announced. The diverse locations facilitate participationacross the world's Internet community.
