Linux KVM Cloud Hosting
What is Linux KVM?

KVM stands for Kernel-based Virtual Machine and is a module that allows virtual machines to run under a Linux host. It takes advantage of special instructions in modern processors to provide near-native performance in a fully virtualized environment. KVM is a relatively new, but incredibly stable technology that is included within the mainline Linux kernel. It is, in many ways, similar to Xen, although KVM regularly outperforms it. KVM offers the same experience as a real physical server, while providing customers with the opportunity to run their own custom Linux kernel and modules.
Why Open Hosting chose KVM virtualization?

Before selecting Linux KVM, our engineering team evaluated VMWare, Parallels, and Xen, three of the leading virtualization platforms providing similar capabilities to KVM, and selected KVM as the best architecture for virtualization on modern processors with fast hardware virtualization support (VT-x and NPT on Intel or AMD-V and EPT on AMD).
Hypervisor architecture and device drivers

Linux KVM is a hypervisor built into mainline Linux, using the full-range of hardware virtualization support, and directly using the regular Linux scheduler and I/O device drivers.
VMWare and XEN run external hypervisors, whereas Linux KVM runs a hardware-based hypervisor.

Open Hosting believes the KVM architecture is superior to both Xen and VMWare – the mainline Linux scheduler and device drivers are extremely well designed, widely deployed, professionally maintained, and thoroughly tested, to a level, likely, well above what a single company could achieve on either their own proprietary codebase or a locally maintained fork of Linux.
